It's time for Wildflower's bi-annual Clothing Swap! Join us in the Big Room and get some fun new clothes for FREE!

The Wildflower Clothing Swap is an event hosted twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring! The goal is for families to be able to pass along clean, lightly used clothing or shoes that they are no longer wearing! We will accept both adult and children's clothing. We do request that any items donated are washed and in good condition, please no stains or holes! It you are able to, NEW socks and underwear in a variety of sizes are always greatly appreciated! Clothing and costumes can be donated the week of 10/12-10/17. You are even able to bring contributions the day of the Swap! You do NOT need to donate items in order to be able to take items home! We look forward to seeing all of you there! And if you have any questions, please reach out to Emily A!

What have our Afterschool students been up to lately?

A whole lot of exploring through learning, taking on art projects, setting goals, catching up after break, and getting to know one another! To start the year off right, our Afterschool students have been helping decorate the Big Room with a variety of art projects! One banner they created is made up of each student's goal for the school year! They got to cut and draw a self portrait then fill in their own goal! They also created a banner with Dolly Parton's quote, "Wildflowers don't care where they grow!" Our Afterschool Program students also spent time learning about Dolly's legacy and her work establishing the Imagination Library! They then spent the whole afternoon reading in her honor!

For their theme this year, our Afterschool Program will be learning about different biomes around the world! They will be exploring flora and fauna, learning about the history of different areas, creating art, and completing science projects related to their theme! We can't wait to see what they create next!

Wildflower's adventures in reading! 📖

What does thematic learning look like in our middle school program?

A whole lot of exploration through learning, creative projects, fun field trips, and so much more! Thematic learning looks similar to our other grades, except our middle school program cycles through multiple themes throughout the school year, which are called Cycles! Every cycles focuses on a different theme that connects each of the different subjects together! Whether it's reading an anthology, doing a science experiment, or completing a Social World project, each aspect of the classroom is tied to that specific 6 week theme! And what's super cool about our WOCAP class is that our middle schoolers have the opportunity to go on immersion trips and complete internships! This immerses students into the themes they have been learning about so they get to see what they look like in action, giving the real-world experiences! Right now, our middle schoolers are on their second cycle: Pathways!

Let's take a trip around campus! 🌏📚🏫

Join us as we travel to each classroom and get to know what their themes are for the school year! Each year, our classrooms have a different theme that center all subjects! From science, to art, to literacy, history, math, and beyond, all learning that our students engage in connects back to their classroom theme!

🌳Forest School will be focusing on growth as they learn through their surrounding environment! Together they will observe growth around them and learn how growth takes on many different forms!

🌱 Kali's TK class theme is also growth! This year, the sprouts will be focusing on growing bigger, better, and together as a community! Throughout the year, they will be connecting their learning to all things that grow!

🌷Mary and Morgan's Kinder and 1st grade classes' theme is Imagination Creation Station! This year, these students will be learning about storytelling, color theory, shapes, nursery rhymes, stem, plays, and so much more!

🪻Sammie and Victoria's 2nd and 3rd grade classes' theme is "What Does it Mean to be Wild?" This year, our Fawn Lily and Monkey Flower classes will be learning all about animals, classifications, and their greater ecosystems! Throughout the year, theses students will read books, write assignments, and complete art and science projects related to animals!

🌼 Jessica's 4th and 5th grade class theme is Ecology! Throughout the year, they will be reading and writing on this topic, studying the history of ecology, and learning about all things related to the environment! They will be taking on projects related to sustainability, resources, and waste management!

🌸 Marissa's 4th and 5th grade class theme is Tamed! This theme is based off of Alice Roberts' book "Tamed." Throughout the year, our Starflower class will be connecting their learning to the domestication of plants and animals! To start the year off, they are learning all about the 5 senses and using dogs as the study focus!

How do our middle schoolers kick off the new school year?

By going on an overnight camping trip up in Lassen National Park! Our students stayed at Lassen's Volcano Camp for 2 nights and did all sorts of exploring, community activities, and learning about the natural world! Our WOCAP students went on hikes to alpine lakes and valleys, went swimming in Manzanita Lake, and received lessons from the wonderful Lassen Park Rangers, who taught them all about the park and its resources! And they had an absolute blast!

Each year, at the beginning of the school year, our Wildflower Open Classroom Adolescent Program (or WOCAP) students take a camping trip! Similar to our All-School Campout, this is a way for our middle schoolers to get to know each other and catch up after the summer break! And we'd say it's a pretty fun introduction to middle school and an awesome way to start the year!

What are our students most looking forward to this upcoming school year?

In gearing up for the new school year, we wanted to take a moment to talk to our students and get to know some of their favorite parts bout being back on campus! We talked about what they are most excited about for this school year, what some of their favorite things are from the first days of school, and so many other fun topics! We are so happy to see our students as excited as we are for the new school year! It's already off to a great start!

Starting the year off the Wildflower way!

To kick off the new school year, this past weekend we had our annual All-School Campout! The All-School Campout is our way of welcoming students, families, and staff back into the new school year and creating time for everyone to catch up after summer break! This is also a way for our new families to get familiar with our community and make some friends! Our Campout weekends are always filled with such good times - from cooking and sharing meals together to long, sunny days spent swimming in the creek to stories and talent shows shared around the campfire! The All-School Campout is truly one of our favorite events here at Wildflower!

We want to share our gratitude and appreciation for Deserae, who helped organize and put together the whole weekend! We also want to thank the entire team, Michelle, Ashley, and Emmeline, who put an immense amount of time and work into making this weekend as amazing as it is for all of our families! We appreciate you all so much!

Adventures in Forest School! 🌳🌀📚

A lot has been happening on campus, but we wanted to take a moment to share what's been going on in our Forest School Program! What have our Forest School students been up to this first week of school? Lots of learning, exploring, and getting to know our amazing new Forest School teacher, Zoe!

A day spent in Forest School is a day spent learning and cultivating growth through the exploration of the natural world. Here, students have the opportunity to connect their social, emotional, physical, and intellectual learning to the world, where they develop an understanding of their place in it. Forest School is all about taking risks throughout the learning process in order to create resilient and independent learners! Take a look at what Forest School is all about!

Our first day back was a blast!

We had such a fun day welcoming our students back to campus last week! It was so wonderful to see so many returning students and to meet all the new faces joining us this year! We also had some fun teaming up with our friends from Resolute Dog Training, who joined us in welcoming everyone back for the 2026-2027 school year!

We are so excited for the upcoming year and all the fun times ahead! We can't wait to see everything our students will accomplish and all the memories to be had! Happy first week back Wildflower!

Today is officially the big day!

Happy 1st Day of School! We are so excited to welcome our returning students back to campus and to meet some new additions to our community as well! We hope everyone has an amazing 1st day of school, whether it's first day of school ever or your last before moving onto high school! We are so happy to have our students back on campus! Here's to a great school year!

One of our favorite things about our campus is all of our murals and paintings! 🎨🌀🖌️

We absolutely love walking around campus and seeing so much art brighten our days! Something special about our school is that each classroom is known by a different type of flower, and on each door we have a mural of that flower to match! And even better, each of these flowers were painted by two of our alumni students, Maya and Malia! We also have our all-school mural that each student helped to create! We love how art brightens and brings our community together!

What are Wildflower Open Classroom's 8 guiding principles?

We wanted to take a moment to tell you about the core values that drive our school! In its initial creation, the founding group of Wildflower Open Classroom identified 8 values that would serve as guiding principles for all actions and decisions made by our Wildflower community as a whole. These principles work
and stand as the foundation of our community!

🌸 Joy & Adventure in Learning means that part of the excitement of learning is the challenge of risk-taking, where both failures and successes contribute to personal and academic growth!

🌼 Stewardship means being the example you wish to see as we care for people, our environment, and our community with the joint goal of prosperity and success. We teach and practice eco-awareness and connectivity to our planet!

🌹Community means belonging to a group that works together and has empathy, compassion, and consideration for each other. It means feeling part of the whole and working for the good of the whole!

🪻Being Respectful means creating a safe space where community members listen and speak with care, openness, and compassion. Our community is always open to differences and willing to see situations from others' viewpoints, learning from each other as we work toward shared solutions!

🌺 Integrity means remaining true to our school philosophy while standing up for the vision and intent of our school as we work towards our goals!

💐 Personal Responsibility means taking the initiative to care four our community. Our ongoing goal is to have a community made up of self-motivated, accountable individuals taking pride in their work!

🪷 Collaboration means a learning community where all voices from our students, teachers, parents, staff, administration, and board are heard!

🌷 Positive Communication & Honesty means discussing issues where the common goal is resolution and satisfaction for all parties. We strive to acknowledge the efforts of others and are willing to engage in conversations of all types!

Our summer camp kids have been out adventuring all summer! 🌀🌞🫧

From sunny days spent swimming in the creek to visiting some animal friends, our summer camp kiddos have been up to all sorts of fun! Each week, our summer camp cycles through a different theme with different activities and fields trips! The other week, our summer camp had their Forest Week, where they spent lots of time having fun in the sun and learning about the world around them! Last week was Cooking Week, where they have spent time learning how to make all sorts of delicious snacks and even had the chance to visit the neighboring gardens next door at Little Red Hen! And this week is Special Interest Week! Our summer camp shows how learning and fun go hand-in-hand!

Campus has been much quieter during summer break! ☀️🏖️🌊

We miss seeing so many smiling faces first thing in the morning and having classrooms full of hard workers throughout the day! We hope that each and every one of our students has had an absolute blast during summer break so far! We can't wait to hear all about your Summer adventures in the Fall! Campus misses you and can't wait to have you back in August!

But don't worry! Campus hasn't completely shut down! We've still got our hardworking teachers and office staff gearing up for the new school year and our summer camp, who have been up to so much fun! Stayed tuned to see what they've been up to!

What makes Wildflower Open Classroom unique? We wanted to take a moment to talk about the foundations of our philosophies and the pillars that make us who we are! Our 6 pillars are a set of guidelines that help shape the curriculum of our classrooms, the success of our school, and the overall growth of our students!

🌸 A Constructivist approach to learning, where students actively build their own knowledge rather than passively absorbing concepts!

🪻The Webbing Way describes a thematic based approach to learning in which students' overall education is centered around a specific theme and teachers collaborate to form connections!

🌹Ownership & Personal Responsibility, where students are taught to take charge of completing their assignments alongside supportive accountability from teachers!

🌼 The Whole Child pillar describes a socio-emotional approach to learning where a variety of diverse teaching techniques are used to reach different learning styles!

🌺 Community of Learners, where learning is conducted through multi-grade classrooms, classroom mixers, big buddies (or student mentors), community co-oping, and collaborative planning among teachers!

🌷The Bigger Picture works to connect our students' learning to their larger communities and the world around them!
